We have two small ponds in our back yard. This one is a lined pond in the center of the back yard bordered by a variety of different stones gathered from various places. This pond is home to two koi, a handfull of goldfish, a couple of frogs, water lillies, pickerel, cat tail and more. A redbud overhangs this pond and provides shade for the hostas below. The small evergreen is a dwarf Alberta spruce.

This is a small prefab pond in the back corner of the backyard. Some of the plants surrounding the pond are sedum, creeping phlox and petunias.

The filteration for each of these ponds consists of a submersible pump in a rubbermaid-like container covered with lava rock. The water is pushed through a small ornamental fountain. In this pond it's a turtle which is hidden behind the reeds.

Alligator recirculates water into the larger pond.

A gold colored koi and a goldfish.

This has to be the ugliest and toughest koi. He is gray and hard to see in the water. He was my first. I've found him multiple times out of the pond and in the flower beds. I've also dropped him several times while carrying him to the holding tank.

(UPDATE)
Sorry to say I lost both of these Koi in the winter of 2001.
